A word with Lystrialle
What is your field, and how did you get in?
I'm a hobbyist ethnic folk music composer. I got into it via the Vocaloid/UTAU circuit in 2012, and have been making things ever since. I'm also dabbling in art, as I think it's a great skill to have, but I've got a long way to go comparatively...
Where do you want your Journey to lead you?
I want to make things that can reach and inspire other people.
What would you like to achieve within the next year?
I want to get better! I'm always hoping for self-improvement. I've got a lot of short-term projects ahead of me, so I'm just working on those and hoping to improve while working on them.
So far, how have you been developing your skills?
Lots and lots of practice. https://xkcd.com/1414/ Even if you're unrefined, the best way to improve is to just keep repeatedly doing it. I think that's all there really is to it.
Where does your motivation come from?
"If there's something I want that doesn't exist, then I'm going to make it." I observe other people's works and think about the things I like and want, and then I make things depending on what I personally want to see.
Where do you go when you seek inspiration?
I simply look up things I like, music or art or whatever.
What are some of your favorite artists and genres?
I'm a particular fan of Hidari, Miwa Shirow, Soejima Shigenori, Nuri Kazuya, and Nishimura Kinu. I also like Tsubaki Izumi's art. As for genre, I like anything with a sufficiently fantastical atmosphere.
What are some of your favorite writers and books?
I like Neil Gaiman and Diane Duane's works. Also, C.S. Lewis (not just Narnia!). Go a little back further and I like old fairy tales, the Thousand and One Nights, and Greek mythos literature like the Metamorphoses and the Odyssey.
What do you listen to?
Usually ethnic folk, acoustic things, or anything with a "fantasy" atmosphere (the Victorian Gothic atmosphere is very nice). Fusion genres like electro-folk are great too. But I also like alt-rock and house. I like almost all kinds of music!
What are some of your favorite movies and filmmakers?
I think Forrest Gump is a really good movie. I also like The Princess Bride.
What is your favorite website?
YouTube, where I listen to most of my music.
